Intelligent, resilient microgrid systems

Microgrid Engineering & Design

A microgrid is more than a collection of distributed energy resources. It is a living, dynamic energy system that must balance load, generation, storage, safety, and controls in real time. Phase X designs advanced microgrid solutions that operate both grid-tied and in island mode, ensuring stable, resilient, and continuous power for mission-critical facilities.

Key Benefits

Whether supporting hospitals, campuses, military bases, data centers, or commercial loads, our microgrids integrate solar, BESS, generators, fuel cells, EV infrastructure, and intelligent controls into one coordinated system. From preliminary feasibility through full engineering, power studies, and commissioning, Phase X delivers microgrids designed for long-term performance and adaptability.

  • Early Planning Alignment – Engineered for seamless mode transitions between grid-tied and islanded operation.
  • Resiliency-Centered Design – Black-start capability, redundancy, and load-priority strategies built in.
  • Integrated Controls & SCADA – Microgrid controllers, DERMS, EMS, BMS, and SCADA fully coordinated for stability and efficiency.
  • Site-Specific Engineering – Designed around local load profiles, resiliency goals, and environmental conditions.
  • Modular & Scalable Architecture – Microgrids engineered to evolve with new assets, technologies, and load growth.

Technical Capabilities

Microgrid Engineering Workflow

From early feasibility through commissioning and real-world validation.

1
Stage 1

Preliminary Microgrid Design

Concept & feasibility
  • Define resiliency goals, critical loads, and operating modes (grid-tied and islanded).
  • Identify DER mix: solar, BESS, generators, fuel cells, EVs, and other resources.
  • Evaluate site constraints, interconnection options, and utility interaction.
  • High-level one-line diagrams and preliminary layout concepts.
  • Feasibility review to confirm project path and next design steps.
2
Stage 2

Full Engineering Design

Detailed electrical, civil & controls
  • Interconnection design and utility coordination.
  • Protection schemes, relay programs, and transfer system design.
  • Conduit and cable routing for networking, controls, and power.
  • Schematics, plans, schedules, and auxiliary power/UPS design.
  • Microgrid controller integration and load management strategy.
3
Stage 3

Power Studies & Analysis

Validate performance & protection
  • Short-circuit and load-flow analysis for grid-tied and islanded modes.
  • Arc-flash and coordination studies to refine protection settings.
  • Transient / inrush evaluations for generator and DER behavior.
  • Equipment rating checks and procurement guidance.
  • Design refinements based on study results.
4
Stage 4

Commissioning Support

Startup & real-world validation
  • Custom test plans for grid-tied and islanded operation.
  • Load-bank testing to simulate real operating conditions.
  • Support for black-start, sequencing, and failover testing.
  • Tuning of controls, protection, and SCADA points.
  • Final verification that the microgrid performs as designed.
